Security Tips
If you have a security system
Teach each member of the family how to operate the system. Create “ground rules” for arming the system when leaving the home.
Test the system on monthly basis to be sure the system is operating normally.
If you do not have a security system
Secure all openings (doors, windows, hatches, etc.). Make sure all openings are locked when leaving the home.
Meet your neighbors and establish a “ill watch yours if you watch mine” relationship with them.
If you come home and find something is out of the ordinary go to a neighbors home and ask for help. Do not proceed into your home alone.
Lighting
When you’re away, put your lights on a timer so they come on automatically at dusk. This helps create the impression that you’re occupying the home.
Lighting the exterior of your home can help as well. This eliminates areas for perpetrators to hide.
Midday Break-ins
Burglaries are more likely to occur between the hours of 9 AM and 3 PM in the afternoon. Typically, families are away from the home during this time. This is a perfect time for a burglar to gain access to your home. Don’t leave doors or windows unlocked, even when you are leaving for only a short time.
Educate your children
Teach your kids that it is not a good idea to share information about what is in your home (cash, electronics, etc.) with their friends or strangers.
